On May 25, 2021, the State of Illinois adopted the A17.1.2019 elevator code. Key components of this adoption include the need for enhanced elevator door protection and two-way visual communication in new installations and most modernizations.

Additionally, the state made alterations to the code to include witnessing of fire alarm initiating devices (FAID) which send the car into Fireman’s Emergency Recall.

City of Chicago follows 2016 17.1 elevator code with 17.3 adoption and is excluded from these changes.
